Zuzuka Power Tour 2011:
♥ \\ ZUZUKA PODEROSA /// ♥
(Brooklyn / NYC / Brazil)
Zuzuka Poderosa is the new queen warrior of her own special brand of baile funk. Funk carioca, originating in the favelas of Rio de Janeiro and which borrowed heavily from the Miami booty bass movement, is just the starting place of her sound. Born in Vitoria, Brazil, Zuzuka grew up in Rio, with her formative years spent in the West Indies. She later moved to Brooklyn, NYC to study jazz vocal improvisation and work at her poetry. For the past few years, she’s been building up the underground bailefunk, moombahton and tropical bass scene in New York as a DJ, host and bartender. Currently working on her debut EP, she collaborates with producers from all over the world who mix the past with the future in sur americal-cosmic new ways. She raps and sings in Portuguese, Spanish and English, musing provocatively and sarcastically over boomy electric kick drums and Latin percussion. She makes Carioca Bass music. ‘Interracial musical babies’ all her own. Her sound is fierce and fun, conjuring images of hot summer dance parties on gritty Brooklyn rooftops or up in the hills overlooking the sea. Recently in PRI’s The World, MTV Iggy’s ‘Bands We Like’, and NPR Alt.Latino’s ‘Spotlight’. Zuzuka’s last project with Sonora of Texas’ Peligrosa camp, ‘Sonora Remixes: Zuzuka Poderosa,’ was critically acclaimed around certain underground tropical bass movements.

☠☠ CHICO SONIDO ☠☠
(Mexico / S.F. (Mas exitos / Sistema Local)
Originally from a Mexican small town in El Valle Del Yaqui, Raul
Espinosa, aka Chico Sonido, discovered cut-and-paste music in 1995
while living in London, when “Chemical Brothers were big and there was
all this music coming out from labels like Mo’Wax and Ninja Tune” he
says. The following year, he moved to Monterrey, and started DJing but
it wasn’t until around 2002 that he began to do beat production and
remixing and then, along with another Monterrey DJ known as Toy
Selectah, and a bunch of other friends, he founded the DJ collective
Sistema Local.

☚☚ TURBO SONIDERO FUTURISTICO ☛☛
(San Jose Cal./Mexico ( contradiscos)
What do you know about tumbia? That’s what Roman Zepeda playfully
calls his take on cumbia, which he heard plenty of while growing up in
both East San Jose and Puebla, Mexico. After the video for DJ Shadow’s
“Midnight in a Perfect World” inspired him to shed his teen punk
aspirations and buy turntables, he began making beats and messing with
downtempo, hip-hop, IDM, and even baile funk before repeated trips to
Bersa Discos’ monthly Tormenta Tropical parties prompted him to get
his cumbia on. Last year’s debut EP, Turbo+Cumbia=Tumbia, is not to be
missed, especially its flip of DJ Shadow’s “Organ Donor.”
